My review of Bruno. What's the most offensive film you have ever seen?

So last weekend my husband and I watched Bruno starring Sascha Cohen. You may recognize Cohen from the now canceled HBO series Da Ali G Show, Talledega Nights, or Borat.  If you liked Borat, you MIGHT like Bruno. If you ever watched Da Ali G show Bruno and Borat are two characters from the show. Bruno is a German homosexual who dreams of making it big in the U.S.A. The film follows him around as he tries to do things that other celebrities do to become famous. Many times the joke is on the other people in the film because they have no idea Bruno is fictitious. I would not recommend this movie to many people. It crosses so many lines and on so many levels. That being said, we thought it was hilarious. So so wrong, but still funny. We let our neighbors borrow it thinking they shared our sense of humor. Let's just say we are no longer on speaking terms since they watched it.

That leads me to ask you, dear follower, what is the most shocking/offensive movie you have ever seen? What about it upset you? Would you ever watch it again?

Let me add - nothing rated worse than R!

  1. Hi Mary,

I'm sorry, the part where you mentioned not being on speaking terms with your neighbors had me chuckle. :D

The most outrageous movie I saw... There were so many. Borat is the first that came to mind, though. The "poop" scene was "ew"... No I won't watch it again. I don't get Mr. Cohen's humor. And I'm pretty sure he won't get mine either. :D

  2. Yes the poop scene in Borat is gross. It's also alarming and gag-inducing when his rather large cohort gets naked. I would recommend that you NEVER see Bruno. It's ten times worse than Borat.

I think one of the most offensive and upsetting movies I have ever see is Leaving Las Vegas with Nicolas Cage & Elisabeth Shue. It made me feel sick to my stomach. I think that's one of the bleakest movies I've ever seen. At least give me a happy ending or some glimmer of hope. I never want to see it again.

  3. Does Howard the Duck count? The premise that a talking duck from outerspace could come to Earth, be a rock star and hook up with a chic is beyond offensive to me. Just my two cents.

  4. Leslie -

I think we have a winner. You are so right. How can any movie surpass the "yuck" factor of Howard the Duck? I would have love to be a fly on the wall during the planning stages of that script!

  5. Oh no! Sorry to hear about the neighbours!

I haven't seen Bruno, but did see Borat - found it funny but had me squirmming in my seat a few times!
What about the Jack Ass movies? Now those are over the top in crudeness!

  6. The neighbors and I have made up. They weren't mad - I was just giving them a hard time. The other neighbors are now watching it and they think it's funny. Definitely something you have to take with a grain of salt. See, I guess we all have our limits. I do not enjoy all the Jack Ass stuff. How many times can you watch someone go downs stairs on a bike, skateboard, whatever. Also noticed getting smacked in the family jewels is also a Jack Ass mainstay. However, my husband went and saw one the movies at the theater with friends. Is that a guy thing? Any ladies out there enjoy Jack Ass?

  7. The Deer Hunter IS depressing. The whole movie is shot in a darker lighting as well. Definitely not a "feel good" movie.

  8. ok, I've never seen Borat or Bruno, nor do I have a desire to. I enjoyed cohen in talladega nights (one of my all time fave comedies) but beyond that I don't get him. I saw a few scenes of Borat, and some clips from Bruno and it's just not my cup of tea.
I am a girl who finds jack ass funny (for the most part), having said that, some things they do, especially with the 2nd movie, are just way way too much. I don't find foul mouthed children funny, I don't find jokes about babies on cars or left alone in carriages etc funny
I personally found the majority of The Hangover way beyond my funniness level :D
Now, what's my most offensive movie? as in crude comedy offensive? I found the Will Ferrell ice skating movie offensive, but that may not count because it was more dumb than offensive lol same with Zoolander
Deer Hunter is the top of my list for worst movie ever!!!!! I will never ever understand the appeal of it!

  9. I saw parts of Borat and found it offensive and unfunny. This is in contrast to the South Park Movie and Blazing Saddles, which are offensive and HILARIOUS.

  10. I thought Bruno was funnier than Borat on so many levels. I must admit they are both in bad taste and are beyond toilet humor. Like I wrote before the neighbors on one side said watching Bruno made them want to wash the dirty off. The neighbors on the other side loved it.

So what does that mean? There are least four mentally disturbed individuals living on our street.

I have one bit of advice - don't watch The Hangover with your husband and 68-year-old mother. My mom is sweeter than a bottle of Mrs. Butterworth's but the minute that guy popped out of the truck I knew I was in deep doo doo. That's the only term my mom uses for poop. She stood up and said "This is fucked up!" Yowza! This kind of reaction has not happened since she screamed "This is bullshit" and walked out of Silence of the Lambs.

CKHB - My husband loves Blazing Saddles. Wow, they got away with some racial stuff then. That poor sheriff! I used to love South Park. I don't mind the sexual toilet humor but all the violent stuff is what starting turning me off. I think the last one I watched was the World of Warcraft episode - which almost made me wet my pants.
